Vice Presidential Hopefuls Tim Kaine, Mike Pence Keep Focus on Pennsylvania Voters

Still riding momentum from the vice presidential debate, both Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine continued to focus on the swing-state of Pennsylvania Thursday.

After targeting voters in Harrisburg on Wednesday, Pence had two Pennsylvania events planned for Thursday including a town hall at 11 a.m. at the Wyndham Gettysburg Hotel and speaking at JWF Industries, a steel fabricator, in Johnstown around 6 p.m.

After targeting voters in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Kaine spanned out across the Keystone State Thursday. Hillary Clinton's running mate spoke at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh around 2:15 p.m. after speaking to teachers at an event outside Spring Garden School in North Philadelphia around 8 a.m.

Pence made a quick tour of the battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania before addressing a rally at a nearby hotel. The Republican vice presidential nominee is campaigning through Pennsylvania en route to Ohio.

Pence saw where soldiers from his home state of Indiana fought. The governor and his daughter Charlotte placed flowers at a memorial on the site.

Heading to the hotel for his speech, Pence asked his bus driver to stop near the cemetery where President Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address in November 1863.

Pence and his daughter walked up the hill to the high point in the cemetery past hundreds of the markers of unknown soldiers of the Civil War.

Kaine spoke to reporters Thursday outside a school in Philadelphia, where he took part in a rally calling for more spending on public education. [[396171181, C]]

Kaine says there's a "level of desperation" in Trump's campaign caused in part by the performances of Trump and his running mate in the two debates.

The Democratic vice presidential nominee said Trump flopped in his first debate. Kaine said his Republican counterpart, Mike Pence, refused to defend Trump during the vice presidential debate on Tuesday. [[396104121, C]]

Pence's performance was widely praised, but Kaine said Pence "basically threw him (Trump) under the bus, again and again and again."

The Virginia senator credited his own performance, saying the post-debate focus has been largely on Pence's differences with Trump and not on Kaine's aggressive debate style. [[338107532, C]]
