The Debate Over Table Games

Pa. House to press forward on table games bill

State House members were scheduled to continue debate on a Democratic bill to legalize and tax table games at Pennsylvania's slot-machine casinos.

Monday's debate was intended to sort through the remaining proposed amendments to the bill. A final vote on the bill was not expected before Tuesday.

Legalizing table games would be a key element of lawmakers' efforts to find new tax revenue to offset the state government's huge, recession-driven revenue shortfall.

On Sunday, the chamber debated dozens of amendments over eight hours, as Democrats tried to push the bill past staunch Republican opposition.

Leaders of the Republican-controlled Senate favor legalizing table games, but they oppose some crucial aspects of the House bill.
