Positioning for 2012 Pa. Primary

Some candidates picking up support, campaign staff, others dropping out

With six weeks to go before the Pa. primary, a frenzy of campaign activities are capturing headlines.

On Tuesday two more members of the Pa. GOP Congressional delegation endorsed Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Reps. Charles Dent and Bill Shuster said Tuesday that they believe Romney gives Republicans the best chance to beat President Barack Obama in the Nov. 6 election.

Chester County Rep. Jim Gerlach also has endorsed Romney, as has Allegheny County party chair Jim Roddey and Pennsylvania's GOP national committeeman, Bob Asher. Reps. Tom Marino and Lou Barletta have said they are supporting former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum.

Representatives of the Independence Hall Tea Party PAC also restated support for Romney’s presidential bid. The influential organization was the first Tea Party group in the nation to officially endorse Romney on Jan. 2, on the eve of the Iowa Caucus.

"Ultimately, we believe Mr. Romney is a man of principle who, once elected, will lead our nation back to prosperity," PAC President, Don Adams said about the 2012 presidential endorsement.

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey is among the GOP officials who have remained neutral in the race and so has Pa. Gov. Tom Corbett. But a top Corbett adviser has taken a key position for Santorum.

Brian Nutt will head up Santorum’s campaign in Pa. Nutt managed Corbett's 2010 gubernatorial campaign but left the administration after a few weeks to work for Santorum's longtime media consultant in Pittsburgh, John Brabender. Asked about Nutt's new assignment at an unrelated news conference, Corbett advised reporters not to read anything into it.

For Democrats the race for Attorney General is back down to two candidates.

Don Bailey, a former congressman and former state auditor general, withdrew from the race on Monday. That leaves Democrats a choice between former Bucks County congressman Patrick Murphy and former Lackawanna County prosecutor Kathleen Kane as their nominee to become the state's top legal officer. Republican Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed is unopposed in the primary.

The Pennsylvania primary is April 24, the same day as Delaware, New York, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
