Poll: Obama Tops Christie in NJ

Big gender gap leaves Governor's approval under 50 percent

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's presidential boasts and his popularity take a hit in a new poll.

A Quinnipiac University Poll out Wednesday finds that six out of 10 residents don't believe Christie when he says he could beat President Obama.

"Forget the White House for now, Gov. Christopher Christie says, and New Jerseyans pretty much agree with him as they back President Barack Obama by a hefty margin," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Christie also trails Obama on a question that combines job approval and likeability. About 46 percent say they like Obama and his policies, while 38 percent say the same about Christie.

Focusing strictly on job approval, the governor's 47-46 rating is down from the 52-40 he got in February. But Christie still enjoys a higher approval than other elected politicians in the state.

"And there's a real gender split over this 'Jersey guy' governor: Men like him a lot; women don't," Carroll said.

The poll shows men approving Christie at 56 percent and women at 38 percent.

The telephone poll of 1,532 registered voters was taken April 12-18 and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
