Booker Is Senate Race Favorite: Poll

A new poll shows Newark Mayor Cory Booker with a big lead in the special U.S. Senate election to complete the term of the late Frank Lautenberg.

The Monmouth University Poll released Thursday showed Booker would get three-fifth of the votes in a Democratic primary. No others would get more than 1 in 10.

All four Democrats were ahead of former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan in the general election. Only Booker's lead was more than twice the margin of error.

About 60 percent did not have any opinion of Reps. Frank Pallone or Rush Holt or Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver.

The poll of 363 likely voters was conducted Monday and Tuesday. The sampling error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Two other polls this week also showed Booker ahead of his fellow Democrats in the August 13 special primary.

The general election to take over Lautenberg's seat is set for Oct. 16.
