Philly Fire Department β€œBrown Outs” Coming

Budget deficit leaving some engines idle for certain parts of the day

The Philadelphia Fire Department is facing cut backs as the city tries to ease its budget crunch.

Fire commissioner Lloyd Ayers announced the details on what he calls "rolling brown outs" during a press conference Monday night.

Fire companies citywide will take turns closing down at different parts of the day.

The brown outs will prevent the need for layoffs or pay cuts, according to Ayers.

"What we'll be doing is closing three fire companies per shift, per day," said Fire Comm. Ayres. "So that'll be three on the day work, three on the night work and we will look at that process over a period of time."

The department needs to save $3.8 million in the next year.
