The Pennsylvania House is nearing a vote on a bill that would reduce the number of state representatives and state senators by about one-fourth.
The debate that got under way Wednesday afternoon on the proposed constitutional amendment would send the legislation over to the Senate, but it has to pass in two consecutive two-year sessions and be approved by state voters in order to become law.
Supporters say it would improve efficiency and communications in the 203-member House, and could result in modest cost savings.
The bill would cut 50 seats from the House, and reduce the number of senators from 50 to 38.
