Pa. Colleges Face 50-Percent Funding Cut

Expect higher tuition if proposal passes

Higher costs could be coming to a campus near you.

Gov. Tom Corbett proposed slashing funding for 18 state-supported Pennsylvania colleges and universities by more than 50 percent during his budget address Tuesday.

Corbett announced the cuts at the 14 state-owned schools in the State System of Higher Education, and the "state-related" schools of Penn State, University of Pittsburgh, Lincoln University and Temple.

While school leaders expected cuts, they said they didn't expect such steep ones.

Students should plan on higher-than-expected tuition hikes if the proposal is approved by lawmakers, said Penn State president Graham Spanier.

Corbett's proposal appears to be the biggest such cut in the country this year, said the Washington-based American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
