Pa. Capital's Mayor-Elect Has His Work Cut Out

Harrisburg's mayor-elect says a lot of residents want to be involved in helping the city but haven't felt connected to its government in recent years.

Bookstore owner Eric Papenfuse says he hopes to take advantage of that as he organizes his transition from private businessman to mayor of Pennsylvania's state capital.

Papenfuse is a Democrat who trounced incumbent Mayor Linda Thompson in the May primary and won Tuesday's election with about 50 percent of the vote. He's been active in Harrisburg politics for years, but this will be the first elective office he has held.

The mayor-elect says he and city department heads will be out in the city meeting with neighborhood leaders so that residents won't have to go to city hall to get questions answered.
