Jersey Shore Town Quietly Settles Suit Over Police Assault

A New Jersey shore area town has quietly settled a lawsuit over an alleged assault by a police officer.

Berkeley Township agreed to pay a man $110,000 in November.

But the deal was not revealed publicly until this month, when an open-government advocate obtained a copy of the agreement and posted it online.

The township and the police did not admit wrongdoing in the case.

Darren Yurrick, now 39, sued in 2013 claiming that an officer hit him in a jail cell in January 2013 after he was arrested on charges related to a domestic violence incident. Yurrick later pleaded guilty to lesser charges, according to the Asbury Park Press.

The alleged assault was captured on a video.
