Delaware Gov. Jack Markell signed a bill Monday aimed at improving employment opportunities for the disabled.
The new law requires that state agencies providing services to people with disabilities consider, as a first option, competitive employment for the disabled.
But officials say it does not require an employer to give preference to hiring persons with disabilities.
State agencies will be required to coordinate and collaborate in efforts to comply with the law, which establishes an oversight commission as part of the state Council for Persons with Disabilities.
As the new chair of the National Governors Association (NGA), Gov. Markell just launched a year-long initiative, A Better Bottom Line: Empowering People with Disabilities.
