Neshaminy Schools to Resume Wednesday

Second teachers’ strike ends with little progress on new contract

The Neshaminy teachers’ union agreed to end a second strike Monday and return to school.

The announcement came after a court hearing on a state education department request for an injunction to end the strike so the school year can be completed by the end of June.

The Neshaminy Federation of Teachers offered to return Tuesday. The school district decided to resume classes on Wednesday for all kindergarten through 11th graders, teachers and staff. Neshaminy High School graduation is on Wednesday, with a plan to distribute diplomas at a later date.

A contract negotiating session is scheduled on Tuesday evening.

The contract dispute began in 2008. Teachers staged a 9-day strike back in January. A non-binding arbitration recommendation in May was rejected by the school district. The latest walkout began June 4.

The main sticking points include health care contributions and raises.

The NFT and the school district are set for another court meeting on June 25.
