New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine and Republican Challenger Chris Christie were running neck-and-neck one day before the election, according to a new poll released Monday.

A last-minute Quinnipiac University Poll showed Christie leading Corzine by only two percentage points, 42 percent to 40 percent, with independent candidate Chris Daggett coming in a distant third at 12 percent.

Just last week the same poll showed Corzine leading by five points.  The poll’s margin of error is 2.5 percentage points.

Daggett’ supporters may have a hand in helping to decide the race, as 38% percent say they may change their minds and support Corzine instead.

The three major candidates spent most of Monday making a final pitch to voters in the Northern part of the state before Tuesday’s election.

Corzine campaigned in Bergen, Passaic, Hudson and Essex counties before wrapping up in Mercer.

Christie started the day in Burlington and Monmouth counties before heading north to Essex, Bergen and Morris.

Daggett spent much of the day in Bergen, the state's largest county. Daggett enjoyed good ballot placement in that county and hopes to cut into support for his major-party rivals.
