Mayor: Jobs Week Means Philly Business Expansion

Urban Outfitters, GlaxoSmithKline join job creation efforts

Mayor Nutter is hosting a series of jobs-related economic opportunity events in Philadelphia this week.

Clothing retailer Urban Outfitters will announce on Wednesday the addition of 1,000 jobs as part of an expansion at its headquarters at the Navy Yard Corporate Center.  The company already employs about 1,500 people at the Navy Yard.

The large waterfront complex in South Philadelphia was developed into a corporate office center after the Navy officially closed it in 1995.

Pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline announced on Tuesday that it will move 1,300 employees from center city Philadelphia to a new high-tech building at the Navy Yard complex.

"The Navy Yard Corporate Center is an attractive location where we not only provide businesses with the opportunity to grow, but we actively support it," said Mayor Nutter.

Glaxo said it has signed a 15-year lease for a new 205,000 square foot building.  The company plans to move all employees currently based at the One and Three Franklin Plaza Buildings to the Navy Yard property beginning in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The Mayor also led the groundbreaking, on Tuesday, for a redevelopment project of the entire city block at 600 North Broad Street.  Plans include new rental units and 39.000 square feet of new commercial space, that could attract over 200 permanent jobs.

"This North Philadelphia redevelopment project is a great example of the public-private partnerships that revitalize communities," Mayor Nutter said.

Michael Nutter is in the final year of his first term and is running for reelection this year.  He will outline his broad economic opportunity goals in a speech during the annual Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce Annual Mayoral Luncheon, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, on Thurdsay.

Mayor Nutter is scheduled to be a guest on NBC10 @ Issue with Steve Highsmith, airing Feb. 13th at 11:30 a.m.
