Milton Street Can Run for Mayor: Judge

Nutter loses bid to block Milton Street from challenging him in May primaries

A judge has rejected Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter's request to stop his predecessor's brother from challenging him for re-election.

Common Pleas Judge Jimmy Lynn said Monday that T. Milton Street will remain on the May 17 Democratic primary ballot.

Nutter said Street hasn't lived in the city long enough to run. Street, the brother of former Mayor John Street, was released from a federal prison in Kentucky last year after serving a tax-evasion sentence.

Nutter also said his challenger used a Moorestown, New Jersey address in documents surrounding his indictment. Street said he always has maintained a Philadelphia residence.

Street told the Daily News that Nutter wants him off the ballot because he might take votes from Philly's poor neighborhoods.

The Daily News reports the mayor will not challenge the judge's decision. Street says he plans to resume campaigning and called on Nutter to participate in a debate.

"Oh I want to debate him so bad, so bad," Street told the Daily News.
