Home State Support for Santorum Presidential Bid

Pa. Senate GOP leaders back former Senator

Two Republican leaders of the Pennsylvania Senate are throwing their support behind Rick Santorum for the GOP presidential nomination.

Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati of Jefferson County and Appropriations Committee Chairman Jake Corman of Centre County made their comments at a Capitol news briefing on Tuesday.

Scarnati and Corman, both personal friends of Santorum, said they believe the outspoken, conservative former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania has the experience and the character that the nation needs.

They said Santorum enjoys the backing of 15 of the 30 Republicans who control the state Senate.

Despite polling that shows him far behind in the race for the presidential nomination, they said he still could emerge as the nominee in such a large and volatile field of candidates.
