Gov. Christie is 3rd on VP Poll

Outspoken GOP Gov. is popular among voters nationwide

NJ Gov. Chris Christie's name keeps coming up as a possible vice presidential candidate.

The unabashed New Jersey governor places third among voters on a new national poll.

The Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind Poll out Monday finds Florida Sen. Marco Rubio mentioned most often by registered voters when asked who should be the GOP's vice presidential nominee. Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum comes in second, ahead of Christie in the survey.

“The question was open-ended,” said Peter Woolley, a political scientist and director of the poll. He said people came up with the names without any prompt.

Christie was mentioned 47 times, or 6 percent, placing ahead of Sarah Palin, the GOP’s Vice Presidential candidate last time around.

A single percentage point separates Rubio from Santorum and Santorum from Christie. Palin finished in fourth place and Newt Gingrich placed fifth.

The telephone survey of 799 registered Republican and independent voters nationwide was conducted from Feb. 6-12 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.
