Dems See Bumpy Road With New State Map

Pa. House debates new U.S. House district lines

A bill that would redraw Pennsylvania's U.S. House districts while helping ensure the majority are held by Republicans is being debated in the state House of Representatives.

Monday is the second-to-last of the state House's scheduled voting sessions before legislators take their traditional holiday break.

Democrats are trying to amend the Republican-written bill with a congressional district map they say follows the suggestions of good-government groups Common Cause and the League of Women Voters.

House Democratic Whip Mike Hanna says his party's congressional map protects voter interests by emphasizing compact districts and ensuring traditional communities of interest are together.

Republicans say their map seeks to protect incumbent U.S. House members, since those are the people already picked by voters, and criticize the Democrats' alternative as splitting more counties.
