Christie Vetoes DRPA Raises

Gov. Chris Christie has vetoed a decision by the bistate transit agency that operates bridges between New Jersey and Philadelphia to give raises to some of its union workers.

The Republican said the raises approved by the Delaware River Port Authority last month "fail to restrain uncontrolled growth in health benefit spending."

The DRPA approved the raises for workers in the International Union of Operating Engineers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Teamsters at its board meeting May 18. The raises averaged 1.9 percent a year.

The workers in the three unions haven't had raises in up to five years.

Christie says the DRPA agreement failed to incentivize plan administrators to better manage health benefits.
