Christie Gives Teachers More Time

NJ gov extends wage freeze deadline

Gov. Chris Christie is extending the deadline for school districts to get teachers to agree to a wage freeze in order to qualify for additional state aid.

Last week the governor said he'll offer more state aid to districts whose teachers agree to a wage freeze for the 2011 fiscal year.

School were required to turn in their proposed budgets this week because local voters go to the polls on April 20 to vote on them.

But the governor now says districts whose teachers agree to the freeze before the state budget is passed on June 30 would still get additional aid.

Christie's offer won't cost the Garden State any more money, but could afford school districts more money to offset steep cuts in aid next school year.
