City's Murder Rate Drops to 30-Year Low

Law enforcement officials in Atlantic City are ringing out 2013 with some good news.

The city's murder rate has fallen to a 30-year low. Three people have been murdered in the seaside gambling resort in 2013 with two days left in the year. That's a big drop from last year's total of 18. Shooting injuries are down by more than 30 percent as well.

The last time as few as three people were murdered in the city was in 1983.

Several factors are credited for the decrease, particularly the arrests of reputed members of two of the city's most violent gangs. Local, state and federal agencies have collaborated on those investigations. The Atlantic City Press reports community outreach efforts also have played a role.

“You can’t really point to any one single strategy,” Police Chief Henry White told the paper.
