A.C. Adds Special Police for Boardwalk & Tourism District

New officers will carry out NJ Gov. Chris Christie's ‘Clean & Safe’ initiative for the shore resort city.

Atlantic City has 20 new police officers on the job who are assigned to patrol the Boardwalk and other popular tourist areas.

Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa and Atlantic City Public Safety Director Will Glass announced the start of the new program on Tuesday.

The 20 special law enforcement officers are recent police academy graduates. The police department will deploy six to eight of those officers on each shift..

“Wherever people go around the Boardwalk and casinos, day or night, they will find their path well-lighted and shared by officers and 'ambassadors' who are there to guide them and ensure their safety,” said Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa.

Dozens of other officers on bike patrols and ATV duty are also assigned throughout the city. The casinos also employ over 30 security officers. A group of 60 "ambassadors" employed by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority help guide visitors and also serve as added eyes and ears for security.

Atlantic City Police expect to launch a new system for reporting anonymous tips in the near future. The “Tip 411” system will allow the public to exchange text messages with police in a two-way confidential ‘chat.’
