U.N. Sounds Alarm on Refugee Camp Seized by ISIS

Syria's Yarmouk refugee camp, which was invaded last week by Islamic State militants, is facing a dire humanitarian crisis as some 18,000 civilians have been trapped with limited food and water supply, a U.N. official said Tuesday. Thousands of civilians are in "immediate danger," caught in the crossfire of street battles between ISIS rebels who launched a push to seize control of the camp from rival armed groups like the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front. U.N. Relief and Works Agency spokesman Chris Gunness said Tuesday the situation on the ground is "completely dire" and civilians must be evacuated. He stressed that — despite the presence of armed groups — an evacuation would be possible.
