‘SNL': Comedian John Mulaney Hosts While Country Rocker Thomas Rhett Performs

After yet another tumultuous week in American politics, the cast of 'SNL' inject some humor into the chaos

After a week off, the cast of ‘Saturday Night Live’ eagerly returned to give their take on the week’s news.

The show kept in line with a theme of the season, parodying the Congressional hearing of President Donald Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen. Cohen was interviewed this week by Congress members over his involvement in various potential crimes in the Trump White House.

Ben Stiller returned to reprise his role as Cohen, mimicking the former Trump associate’s somber answers.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury” Stiller begins, before Kenan Thompson’s Elijah Cummings reminds him that he is not in court.

Former cast member Bill Hader returned to resounding applause, playing a defensive and self-defeating Jim Jordan. Several other politicians made appearances including Kate McKinnon as Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Kyle Mooney as a fumbling Paul Gosar.

Comedian John Mulaney hosted the show for the second time and performed a monologue filled with his own stand-up comedy and experiences living in New York City.

Trump claims crime rates are soaring. The numbers indicate otherwise.

Mulaney’s monologue focused on those archetypal NYC moments, such as the evolution of police sirens, which Mulaney did an enthusiastic impression of, and bumping into Woody Allen while taking your French Bulldog Petunia for a walk in a stroller.

The cast couldn’t help but poke fun at California Senator Dianne Feinstein’s recent run-in with a young group of climate change protesters from the Sunrise Movement. A video of the conversation went viral after some said Feinstein shut down the ambitions of the activists by claiming the Green New Deal was not a viable option.

Cecily Strong played an unrestrained Feinstein, trying to make amends for the video but repeatedly failing to engage appropriately.

“Is that a poster? Well, I’m convinced!” says Strong sarcastically to one of the children.

‘Weekend Update’ hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost break down some more of the week's news nuggets, including R. Kelly and Jussie Smollet.

The pair, as usual, couldn’t help but insert their usual smirking one-liners. Colin Jost jokes that baseball superstar Bryce Harper’s new $330 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies finally answers the question of “how much would someone have to pay you to live in Philadelphia?”

Country music singer Thomas Rhett performed as the musical guest, debuting his new song ‘Don’t Threaten Me With a Good Time.”
