Oscar-winner Sean Penn said the #MeToo movement is aimed at dividing men and women and "too black and white," "Today" reported Monday.

Penn made the comments when he and Natascha McElhone, co-stars of the new Hulu show "The First," were being interviewed for the "Today" show. McElhone had said her character, who oversees a mission to Mars, is informed by the movement, but Penn disagreed, saying the movement was built on salaciousness.

"The spirit of much of what has been the #MeToo movement is to divide men and women," Penn said.
