Rio Rushes to Stop Crime Before World Cup, 2016 Summer Olympics

Rio de Janeiro is set to host the World Cup this June and the 2016 Summer Olympics, two events that officials hope will get the city internationally recognized as a new cultural hub. But before any competition lights up Rio, officials have to get rid of its darkness -- the crime plaguing bordering hillside shanty towns. The effort is part of a greater battle with the criminals in the South American nation involved in the deaths of more than 1.15 million people between 1980 and 2011, a population roughly equivalent to that of Dallas, Texas. Officials have pledged that Rio will be safe in time for the upcoming sports events, ramping up on security forces and organizing raids to stop gunmen, thieves and drug runners.
