#RickyRenunció: Celebs React to Embattled Governor's Resignation

The viral hashtag documenting two weeks of furious protests changed tenses late Wednesday

#RickyRenuncia has turned into #RickyRenunció.

The viral hashtag documenting two weeks of furious protests changed tenses late Wednesday after embattled Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló officially announced he would resign on Aug. 2, following a political scandal set off by a leak of crude and insulting chat messages between him and his top advisers.

A crowd of thousands outside the governor's mansion in Old San Juan erupted into cheers and singing after the announcement, and the excitement was echoed by Puerto Rican celebrities on Twitter.

"Group chat is lit," said "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with a screenshot of a conversation thread showing all-caps celebrations and thumbs-up selfies.

Others joining in on the social media celebrations were rapper Residente and singers Bad Bunny and Ricky Martin, who was denigrated in the chats by one of Rosselló’s top officials.

"Thank you Puerto Rico, the happiness I feel is indescribable. It was a message of unity and fight but from the heart. Today we learned that what unites us is our hearts. Tomorrow morning at 9am I'll see you at the Milla de Oro. I'll be there with @@sanbenito @NickyJamPR @WisinOficial and you Puertorro (Puerto gold)," tweeted Residente in Spanish.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Martin praised the people of Puerto Rico for accomplishing their goal "with no guns, like Gandhi" and called on citizens of the U.S. territory to be vigilant against corruption. "Go and celebrate, but please do not drop the ball. Eyes wide open from now on," he wrote.

Puerto Rico we did it. And we did it in peace. With no guns, like Gandhi. We demanded respect and we were heard. Respect for our children, respect for our women, respect for the LGBT community, respect for our dead. This will never happen again. We won’t let anyone walk all over us again. We will be attentive, vigilant. There’s so much to do now. It is now we need to work more than ever. We succeeded today because we were united. For many decades Puerto Rico was divided. NOT ANY MORE. I am hopeful of our new generation that is instinctively moving things forward. And now, we turn the page. I see a very bright future. I now feel very calm as I celebrate. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions. From anger to joy (I’ve cried like crazy). This has been a birth. We now can achieve anything we want. We are an example. No more corruption, no more trash. WE’VE RESCUED OUR ISLAND. And now, go out to the streets. GO AND CELEBRATE but please DO NOT DROP THE BALL. EYES WIDE OPEN FROM NOW ON. I want to thank the members of the press for keeping us informed. Thank you. Because of your outstanding job, the whole world listened. I am sure some “Leaders of the world” won’t be able to sleep tonight. I’m sure some are nervous. We’ve written a powerful page in history tonight. PUERTO RICO, ESTAMOS BIEN. Te amo.
