“Piranha 3DD” Trailer Weirdly Disappointing, Even With The Hoff

We were a little embarrassed by how much we enjoyed "Piranha 3D," so imagine our excitement when we heard there was a sequel on the way. But now that we've seen the trailer, we're doubtful they'll be able to recapture that old magic.

This new film takes place a year after the prehistoric man-eaters attacked spring breakers at Lake Victoria, but this time they've managed to swim their way into the town's plumbing, which leads them right to the buffet that's known as the Big Wet water park.

Unfortunately, the cast had to be almost totally repopulated, with only Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames and Paul Scheer returning from the original cast. How Rhames survived the first film is anyone's guess, but he's sporting gun legs a la Rose McGowan in "Grindhouse", though it doesn't look nearly as good on him. But the biggest loss is no doubt director Alexandre Aja, who brought such a joie de vivre to the whole affair. He's been replaced by John Gulager, who helmed the "Feast" trilogy.

This new one, however, has attracted the likes of David Hasselhoff, Katrina Bowden, Danielle Pennbaker, Gary Busey and David Koechner, so that's something.

"Piranha 3DD" was supposed to come out Nov. 23, but Weinstein has pushed it back to 2012 to make way for "My Week With Marilyn," allowing the more high-brow film to open deeper into Awards Season.
