Protesters Plan to Occupy Black Friday

The same website that encouraged people to join Occupy Wall Street is urging people to sit out Black Friday. In what Canadian anti-consumerist magazine Adbusters is calling Buy Nothing Day, protesters are urged to, well, buy nothing on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. They are asking Americans to put "the breaks on rabid consumerism" through "flash mobs, consumer fasts, mall sit-ins, community events" and spread the word with the hash tag "#OccupyXMas" on Twitter. MSNBC.com points out that this is actually the 20th Buy Nothing Day organized by the magazine, but the first one since the Occupy protests gained traction around the country. Another site, "Stop Black Friday," promises the effort won't "stop the magic of the holiday season." Others worry that "OccupyXmas" will "coerce the shopping joy out of Christmas," as Michael Mulvey, a Canadian professor, told The Vancouver Sun.
