Mexican Female Police Chief, 21, Awaits Asylum Ruling

The 21-year-old female police chief of a dangerous Mexican town escaped across the border into Texas and is awaiting a ruling in her asylum case, CNN reported.Marisol Valles Garcia, her parents and 1-year-old son fled the town of Praxedis after repeated threats from drug gangs. The criminology student made it safely to Texas, but El Paso attorney Carlos Spector said there's no guarantee asylum will be given. "I have no doubt she will be killed" by drug cartels if she returned to Mexico, he said. Valles Garcia said she took the job no one wanted after the former police chief was decapitated because she "had a beautiful idea" and vision for a safer town. She hired 13 female officers who didn't carry weapons and offered jobs to women widowed by the drug war.
