Israeli Military Chief Doubts Iran Wants Nuclear Bomb

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long warned of the dangers of a nuclear Iran — but Israel's top military brass said Wednesday that he doubts Iranian leaders would choose to build a nuclear bomb given the chance. Israeli Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz told Israeli newspaper Haaretz in an interview published on Wednesday that he believed Iran was led by "very rational people" who he doubted would want to "go the extra mile" to acquire the bomb. But Netanyahu said in a CNN interview Tuesday that he wouldn't want to risk "the security of the world on Iran's rational behavior" and said the Islamist theocracy could very well "put their ideology before their survival." Israel and the U.S. worry Iran is trying to develop the bomb, despite its insistence otherwise, but Gantz's comments reflect disagreement among top Israeli officials about what kind of existential threat Iran might pose.
