Hugo Chavez in “Critical State of Health”: Reports

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is in a critical state of health after undergoing surgery in a Cuban hospital, according to U.S. intelligence sources, El Nuevo Herald reports. According to the Spanish-language sister newspaper to the Miami Herald, the leader's daughter and ex-wife were flown to Havana in recent days; its sources said, however, that Chavez is in no immediate danger of dying. Since June 8, Chavez has run his country from a hospital bed in Cuba while recovering from a mystery ailment. His office says he was struck by a pelvic abscess during a meeting with Fidel Castro, but rumors have swirled in Caracas that he has prostate cancer based on his unusual public silence.
