FDA Detains Pomegranate Seeds Tied to Hep. A Outbreak

Food and Drug Administration officials said they will detain shipments of pomegranate seeds imported from Turkey now that an investigation has identified the fruit as a common link in the nationwide hepatitis A outbreak, NBC News reported. FDA officials say an unspecified amount of shipments from Goknur Foodstuffs Import Export Trading will not be admitted in the U.S., effective immediately. It was not immediately clear how much product could be detained. At least 127 people in eight states have been sickened by acute hepatitis A after consuming the fruit mix, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday. Fifty-five people have been hospitalized.
