Laser scan could be used to help rebuild monument if damaged

See why the monument is getting laser treatment and take a look at our list of must-reads that will have you chatting at the lunch counter, over IM or wherever it is that people actually talk these days.

  • Mount Rushmore is getting the laser treatment. The monument featuring the faces of Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt will be laser scanned by groups from Scotland and California that hope to create a digital 3D model. It can also help cull the data necessary to rebuild the mountain carving in the event of a disaster or attack.
  • Chris Brown, who is accused of beating ex-girlfriend friend Rihanna, has seen a spike in record sales -- and it's thanks to  a viral video on YouTube. The vid of a wedding party dancing down the aisle to Brown's "Forever" has been viewed more than 10 million times and the song, released last year, is now in the iTunes top 10.

  • An increasing number of doctors are prescribing an anti-craving drug that allows patients to fight against temptation without being sober. The pill works by curbing patients' addictions but does not require them to abstain from the substance to which they're addicted. The approach flies in the face of abstince-only programs like AA's 12-step or simply going cold turkey.
