Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei paid the government a $1.3 million bond Tuesday after tax authorities threatened to turn an investigation into his company over to police. The deposit, which came from funds raised by supporters, allows Ai to fight a $2.4 million tax evasion charge against his company, Beijing Fake Cultural Development. Ai, a conceptual artist known for his criticism of the Chinese government, was detained by police for nearly three months earlier this year during a sweeping crackdown on activists. He denied the tax evasion allegations and said that he gave into the demand only out of concern for his associates. "Those in power have the right to do anything and their power faces no restrictions," he said.
