1.1M Affected by Nationwide Insurance Data Breach

The names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of more than 1.1 million Nationwide Mutual Insurance customers have likely been compromised in a security breach Oct. 3. The company—one of the world's biggest insurance and financial services companies—said the breach, which targeted part of its computer network also shared by Allied Insurance, was discovered the day it occurred and has been contained. Clients and customers who inquired about insurance quotes are being contacted by Nationwide and offered free credit monitoring and a year of free identify theft protection. Law enforcement officials are investigating the breach. So far, the insurer is not aware of any reports regarding the misuse of breached data.
