1 in 3 Hurt By Hospital Errors, Study Finds

A new study revealed that one in three people in the United States will encounter some sort of mistake during a hospital stay. Those errors range from bed sores to objects left in the body after surgery to life-threatening staph infections. Health Affairs editor-in-chief Susan Dentzer told Reuters the findings--which are ten times higher than estimates reached by older methods of collecting data--show how overall health care progress "has been agonizingly slow." An extreme example occurred earlier this month, when an Alabama pharmacy was sued over alleged contaminated IV nutritional supplements that sickened 19 people and killed 9, Alabama Live reported.
