A company that distributes to stores on the East Coast is recalling its macadamia nuts over concerns about salmonella.
Mahina Mele Farms, which distributes primarily to retailers on the East Coast and in Hawaii, where it is based, recalled the 6- and 16-ounce packages of unsalted and salted Izzie Macs! Macadamia Nuts after routine Food and Drug Administration testing found salmonella in some products, the FDA said.
The company's bulk Macadamia nuts, sold in 5-pound bags, and Baby Bruddah's Mac Nut Buttah and Chocolate Mac Nut Buttah, sold in 12-ounce packages, are also affected by the recall. The FDA says the products were distributed to retailers from May 26 to May 29.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the products, but the company said it was recalling all products processed from the particular batch of nuts that tested positive for salmonella "in the interest of public health and safety."
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, nausea and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can lead to severe infections or death. Young children and the elderly, or people with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk for more severe reactions.
