When asked by a producer for the show to clear the air about what has been going on between the couple, Jon was first to confirm the long-anticipated news.

"Yeah, Kate and I have decided to separate," Jon said during a couch interview, which he did throughout the show alone.
"Yes, we have decided that we will separate," Kate said during her own solo interview on the couch.
Jon appeared to be behind the move toward separating and he told the TLC cameras it was one that they needed to make for their children.
"I tried to contemplate it and think about it," the 32-year-old dad said. "It's just not good… for us to be arguing in front of our kids."
Kate said she wasn't thrilled with the move, but ultimately supported it for the sake of their family.
"I am not very fond of the idea personally, but I know it's necessary because my goal is peace for the kids and if peace needs to be brought about by this then I'm in [agreement]," she said.
According to the Gosselin parents, who will both remain on the show (though they expect to film their time with the kids separately), they will take turns living in their Pennsylvania home with the children.
"The kids will remain living in their house," Kate explained. "I've always called this their house. I will remain here as well during my portion of having them. Jon will also come here when it is his days and we will flip flop that way."
When asked by a producer from the show what worries her the most about the split, Kate said a host of things gave her concern.
"The label that we've failed, how that will affect our kids, how they'll be another statistic, how they'll be the kids looking back and [saying], 'Yeah my parents split up when I was fill-in-the-blank age,' and that's primary," she explained. "But for myself, I don't want to be alone. I don't want to do this alone. But it's required and I've gotta do it."
As for Jon, he said he was looking forward to getting on with the next phase of his life.
"I'm hurt by all of this, but I'm excited and hurt at the same time because I have a new chapter in my life. I'm only 32-years-old and I really don't know what's going to happen," he told the TLC cameras.
At the end of Monday's show, TLC ran a message confirming the couple started "legal proceedings" "in Pennsylvania to dissolve the ten-year marriage of Jon and Kate Gosselin."
The couple reached their 10-year anniversary on June 12, 2009. As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, they spent the day apart.
