“It's Kind Of A Funny Story” Looks to Be Kind of a Funny Story

The trailer for "It's Kind of a Funny Story," starring Zach Galifianakis, has arrived and we like what we see, though we have some concerns there might be a touch of melodrama and/or treacle in the mix.

Based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini, "Funny Story" tells of a young man who becomes depressed, and checks himself into a psychiatric hospital to try and work some things out. The book was inspired by Vizzini's own battle with depression.

Keir Gilchrist ("The United States of Tara") stars as Craig, the young man at the center of the action, who encounters Bobby (Galifianakis), a fellow patient who takes him under his wing and shows him the ropes.

Rounding out the cast is every TV casting director's go-to mom, Lauren Graham; "Daily Show" correspondent Aasif Manvi; Emma Roberts, Zoe Kravitz, Jim Gaffigan and Viola Davis, who, despite being a talented actress, seems doomed to play an administrator of one sort or another in supporting roles.

What's got us really excited about this project is the presence of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck as writer-directors. We've loved their two previous films, "Sugar" and "Half Nelson." We're trusting them to keep "Funny Story" on track and avoid the schmaltz that could easily swallow up a film like this.
