The Republican National Committee has generated exactly one good idea this year: suggesting that the Democrats should call themselves "the Democrat Socialist Party."
Unlike the rest of the RNC platform, which seems to be mostly about calling Nancy Pelosi a liar and vetoing budget bills, this proposal really looked like it was going places. It was a simple, powerful idea that got people talking about a very important issue: labels.
A newly renamed Democrat Socialist Party would retain the old Democratic party base while attracting legions of enthusiastic Swedish, Dutch, German, and other traditionally socialist voters into the fold. Why, in a year or two the Democrat Socialist Party might constitute not just a majority but a supermajority! Plus, who wouldn’t want to share their party with citizens of socialist nations, which tend to produce excellent chocolates, spas, and recreational drugs?
The more you thought about it, the crazier it seemed that Republicans would want to make such a helpful suggestion to their political opponents.
Well, it turns out it was all a dumb dirty trick, and Republicans don't want Democrats renaming themselves after all. RNC chairman Michael Steele objected to the "Democrat Socialist" rebranding effort, and some humorless pal of his agreed:
One of Steele's allies on the committee, Florida GOP chairman Jim Greer, told CNN the resolution is "stupid" and "ridiculous."

Well goodness, thems is fightin’ words! Now other members of the RNC, including the guy who proposed this measure in the first place, have promised to “massage the language” so that it will be more acceptable to the chairman and his allies when they vote on it tomorrow.
Question: How can we expect the Republicans to take a firm stand against the tyrannical Democratic President Barack Obama when they cannot stand together on the question of what Democrats should call themselves?
And doesn’t “massaging the language” sound like something you'd do in socialist Amsterdam's red light district, anyway? For shame, RNC. For shame.
