Is the world ready for a black James Bond

Daniel Craig, the dashing star  who caused a stir as the first "blond Bond," thinks so.

"After Barack Obama's victory I think we might have reached the moment for a coloured 007,'' Daniel Craig told The Daily Telegraph in an anachronistic turn of phrase.

But the blond Bond said a black Bond would make Ian Fleming, the author who created 007, "probably turn in his grave."

Speaking at a press conference in Rome prior to the Italian premier of the new Bond film, "Quantum of Solace," Craig gave some love to the President-elect of the United States, saying "I've always been a fan of Obama. The political ideas that have emerged from his speeches seem to me to be genuine."

Craig said modern times could call for modern Bond.

"I think the role could easily be played by a black actor because the character created by Ian Fleming in the '50s has undergone a great deal of evolution and continues to be updated,"  he said.

Craig didn't offer any specific suggestions, but the New York Daily News did not hesitate, naming Taye Diggs, Jamie Foxx, Lance Reddick, Mekhi Phifer and Sharif Adams as its top choices. Why not Denzel Washington, Will Smith or Diddy? "Because Bond traditionally has been someone whose image isn't already that well established," writes David Hinckley.
