Son Shoots, Kills Mom Inside Camden Home: Police

Police arrested a man accused of shooting and killing his mother inside a Camden, New Jersey, home.

Pedro Mercado, 22, has been charged in the shooting death of 38-year-old Iris Sanchez, the Camden County Prosecutors Office confirmed Saturday.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday, police were called to a home on the 1100 block of N. 18th Street for a report of a woman shot, authorities said. Responding officers found Sanchez suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to Cooper University Hospital where she died from her injuries, officials said.

Investigators determined Mercado was the gunman. He was arrested around 8 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Haddon and Benson streets. The motive behind the shooting is not known at this time and remains under investigation.
