Burglary Suspect Captured After Fleeing Across Icy River

Police say a burglary suspect was captured after trying to escape authorities by fleeing across a frozen-over western Pennsylvania river.

Officers responded to a burglary call at a downtown Pittsburgh convenience store at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

They were told that a man had been seen climbing out of a broken window, stuffing scratch-off lottery tickets into his coat before fleeing.

Police said he was later seen running along the river walk and then onto the ice. The suspect turned near Veteran's Bridge and ran across the iced-over Allegheny River.

Police said the 25-year-old suspect reached the North Shore neighborhood, where he was arrested.

Police allege that he was carrying more than 100 scratch-off tickets and a screwdriver and will face charges of burglary, possessing instruments of crime and escape.
