Arkansas Judge Strikes Down Gay Marriage Ban

A judge in Arkansas declared the state's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, NBC News reported. Friday's decision is a victory for the 21 gay and lesbian couples who challenged a state constitutional amendment saying that "marriage consists only of the union of one man and one woman." Seventy-five percent of Arkansas voters adopted the amendment in 2004 and today's ruling will likely face an appeal. Same-sex marriage is currently legal in 17 U.S. states.
