The death of 47-year-old Andrew Getty, the grandson of Depression-era oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, marked another tragic chapter in a family with a history of both tremendous wealth and calamitous misfortune, NBC News reported. J. Paul Getty, who amassed the world's first billion-dollar fortune during the Great Depression, married and divorced five times. Two of his sons died tragically, one of a brain tumor at age 12 and another in a drug-induced suicide. "It's terrible to see the Getty family experience another nightmarish tragedy," said Robert Lenzner, who wrote a 1986 biography of J. Paul Getty, the world's first billionaire. "Great wealth doesn't protect against tragedy in a family."
