Video Shows Fort Lauderdale Streaker After Smoking Flakka

New video showing a man running naked through the streets of Fort Lauderdale after smoking a synthetic drug was obtained by NBC 6.

Matthew Thomas Kenney, 34, was taken into custody Saturday after he was caught running through Broward Boulevard in nothing but sneakers, according to a Fort Lauderdale Police report.

Kenny was detained after a foot chase, part of which was caught on camera by a bystander. He was hospitalized and underwent a mental evaluation, the report said.

Police said he admitted to smoking Flakka and said people were chasing him and trying to kill him, the report said. He said the unknown people had stolen his clothes and said he was running in the road "because if I got hit by a car they would stop chasing me," the report said.

Kenney said he'd rather die than be caught by these unknown people, the report said.

Just last month, law enforcement officials warned the public about the risks of Flakka, which is growing in popularity in South Florida.

James West was arrested after he kicked in the hurricane glass doors at the Fort Lauderdale Police Department in February after getting high on Flakka, officials said.

Flakka is a synthetic street drug mix with a base of bath salts that can result in paranoia, anxiety, psychosis and hallucinations, officials said. Other potential side effects from Flakka include permanent effects on the heart or brain leading to a stroke or even a heart attack.
