US-Led Coalition Airstrike Killed 18 Allied Fighters in Syria: Pentagon

"The target location was actually a forward SDF fighting position"

An airstrike meant for ISIS fighters in Syria mistakenly killed 18 members of Syrian fighters countering President Bashar-al Assad on Tuesday, NBC News reported.

The "friendly fire" strike from the U.S.-led coalition occurred in northern Syria, according to a Pentagon statement.

"The strike was requested by the partnered forces, who had identified the target location as an ISIS fighting position," the Pentagon said in a statement. "The target location was actually a forward SDF fighting position."

Several nations have lent air power to the coalition against ISIS, and it wasn't clear if the strike came from a U.S. plane.
