Tropical Depression 5 Becomes Tropical Storm Erin Over Atlantic

Erin continues to move away from Cape Verde Islands

Tropical Depression 5 became Tropical Storm Erin early Thursday after forming over the far east Atlantic Ocean late Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

As of 11 p.m., the storm continued to have maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour with higher gusts as it moved west-northwest at 15 miles per hour about 340 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands, according to the NHC.

Hurricane Season: Special Coverage

The tropical storm warning that had been issued for the southern Cape Verde Islands was discontinued as of 11 a.m., and there were no watches or warnings in effect.

Erin is expected to strengthen during the next couple days, the NHC said.

The storm is expected to keep moving to the west-northwest for the next few days, but at a slower speed.
