Post: Prisoner Says Gray “Intentionally Trying to Injure Himself”

An article published Wednesday in The Washington Post said the prisoner who was sharing the police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators he believed Gray “was intentionally trying to injure himself” by “banging against the walls” of the vehicle, according to a police document.

The Post obtained an investigative document showing the unnamed prisoner was separated from Gray by a metal partition and could not see him.

The document was written by a Baltimore police investigator and it is unknown if there is additional evidence to support the claim.

The Baltimore Police Department would not comment to NBC News about sealed court documents. NBC affiliate WBAL reporter Jayne Miller told MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell that the Washington Post article's timeline "doesn't match" their reporting.

According to the Post, Jason Downs, one of the attorneys for the Gray family, said the family had not been told of the prisoner’s comments, but disagreed with any implication that Gray severed his own spinal cord.

The investigation is expected to be handed off to the state’s attorney on Friday, but it is unlikely those details will be released to the public at that time.

Gray died a week after being taken into police custody on April 12. He suffered a spinal injury, but it isn’t known when the injury occurred.

There have been protests and riots in Baltimore since Gray’s death. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency in Baltimore on Monday.
